Sermon by Pastor Jayme
There are many ways to read and interpret scripture.
You can read scripture in it’s original language, focusing on the details of verb tenses and word translations. You can read scripture from multiple translations to note the discrepancies among scholars and traditions. You can interpret scripture using movies, and music, and media that is influenced by certain passages.
Some of you may have read scripture in contemplative ways before… using spiritual practices to enhance the reading and understanding of the text.
Lectio Divina – or the ‘divine reading’ of sacred texts – in one such practice to contemplate scripture. Readers are invited to listen closely and to note words or phrases through which God is speaking to them. Through prayer and meditation, the reader grows deeper in exploration and understanding of the selected reading.
