Opportunities to Serve

Youth Mission Trip Fundraising
In August First Parish will be taking 12 adults and 25 high school youth to Neon-Fleming, Kentucky to volunteer with HOMES Inc. (www.homesincorporated.org).  Every year we strive to make mission trips as affordable as possible because we believe that these experiences positively shape who our youth become as adults.

Please consider financially supporting our efforts if you are able to do so.  Throughout the month of March there will be an envelope wall in Fellowship Hall with envelopes numbered 1 to 100.  To support the trip, take an envelope and return it with the amount of money marked on front.  Envelope 1 would be $1.00.  Envelope 100 would be $100.  Your support allows us to continue to offer these trips to local youth every year.  Thank you.

Stewardship Volunteers Needed – On April 7, we will kick-off our annual stewardship campaign.  We are looking for volunteers who are willing to either speak or write about why they choose to financially support the work of First Parish.
If you are willing to help out, please contact Kate.

Coffee Hour -There is a new signup sheet on the bulletin board.  There are openings in March, April and May.  You may bring your own snacks or check the bottom shelf of the freezer to use what we have.  We supply the frozen lemonade and the half and half for coffee.  You would come in one hour before church to set up and clean things up after coffee hour.  If you have never been a Coffee Hour volunteer, we will mentor you on your first Sunday.  Thank you for your consideration.

Soul Spa Spring 2019 – “I’ve Been Thinking…”

Dates:  3/9, 3/16, 3/23 and 3/30      Time:  9:30 – 10:30 am.

We will gather upstairs in the chapel each week and we strive to start and finish promptly.  There is no homework, no requirement to read ahead just come to join the conversation and sharing of experiences or reactions to the readings.  Don’t worry if you can’t make all four Saturdays just come when you can.

This spring’s studies will use writings from Maria Shriver’s book, “I’ve Been Thinking…Reflections, Prayers and Meditations for a Meaningful Life” to generate thought and conversation.  Each session will have a theme, Healing, Kindness, Gratitude and Prayer.  If you have other favorite readings on these topics feel free to bring those to share as well. Two copies of the book will be available in the Church library in late February.  Merrill Memorial Library also has two copies.

If you have any questions please contact Mary Stuart at 207-776-1201 or [email protected].

Lenten Reader
Copies of this year’s Lenten reader will be available in print  from the church office or online at https://bit.ly/2EC87gr. This year’s reader focuses on using creativity to build our relationship with the divine, using the Psalms as a starting point. In a conversation with Eugene Peterson, Bono said, “Why do we need art?  Why do we need the lyric poetry of the Psalms?  The only way we can approach God is we are honest through metaphor, through symbol.  Art becomes essential, not decorative.” We hope this year’s Lenten reader inspires you to creatively approach God and deepen your relationship with the Divine.

The New Mainer community has come to our community and we have the opportunity, as neighbors, to connect and support them right here, right now, through 95 Main. 95 Main, a YCHI project initiated by First Universalist Church, is offering housing to newly arrived immigrants as they seek a safe, secure home base. We invite you to participate in furnishing their home.
Choose an item ( or two or three) from our lists to donate to 95 Main. Unless otherwise specified, items do not have to be new, but they should be in great shape. On these pages you will find those items organized by room.

Proposed Sanctuary Renovation – On Feb. 3, the Trustees presented an architectural plan to renovate the sanctuary, making it safer, more usable, and accessible while maintaining the historical integrity of our space.  This was an opportunity to learn more about proposed changes and to ask questions.  The trustees will not proceed with any plans without the approval of the congregation via an official congregational vote.  Please click here to look at drawings of the proposed changes: https://bit.ly/2RHFVgG.
